The Aarhus Sailing Week is also one of the oldest – founded back in the sixties at the same time with the Aarhus Cultural Festival which was also founded then. City authorities wantet sport events to be a part of the cultural festival and local sailing clubs jointly initiated what now is known as Aarhus Sailing Week.
Since then both the Aarhus Sailing Week and the Aarhus Cultural Festival have expanded sucessfully.
Today, the Aarhus Cultural Festival is among the largest cultural events in Scandinavia and showcases both local, national and international artists.Aarhus Festival is highly esteemed and recognized both in Denmark and abroad.
The patron of Aarhus Festival is HM Queen Margrethe II and the Mayor of Aarhus is Chairman of the Festival Board. The festival is held in late August and early September.
Aarhus Festival was first held in September 1965 and has developed into both an international festival and a major local cultural event. For 10 days every year in August – September the streets and alleys, clubs, stages, galleries and museums of Aarhus are teeming with entertainment and events.
The Aarhus Sailing Week has also grown. Today it is a two-in-one event with the first half part beeing mainly a dinghy event and the second half beeing an event for international one design keelboats like Melges 24, J80, H-Boat, CB-66, Folkboat, Yngling, Soling, Dragon, X-35 ecc.
The 2012 Aarhus Sailing Week will include the following events and classes:
- Aarhus Olympic Autumn Regatta – 49er, Finn, Laser Standard, Laser Radial, RSX, 470 and Finn Class (ISAF Grade 3)
- TORM Open Youth Granprix – 29er, Europe, Laser, Laser Radial, 470, Hobie Spi and RSX.
- 29er Euro Cup
- International A-Class Catamaran Open Nationals
- Zoom 8 national ranking event
- RS One, SL 16, OK and Contender
The 2012 Aarhus Sailing Week is an ISAF Grade 3 event for Olympic Classes.
